Dear Generation,

I know.  I know.  I talk a lot of shit about you.  I talk a lot about how disappointing and apathetic you are.  I talk about being disgusted and how all you care about is pop culture.  I talk about how you guise ignorance under fake rebellion.  Amid my cynicism, I belittle YOUR cynicism.

Tonight though, you have made me proud.  I REALLY believe that you...that WE made a difference today.  I really believe that today amongst us, more often than not, you threw apathy and cyncism aside and went out and helped do our part to usher in what I really believe is going to be a new age for our country.

A little over 7 years, a good friend came over and I had just woken up.  He came in and told  me to turn on the news.  He told me that the World Trade Center had been attacked.  Our country was under attack.  On that day, our generation got our "Where were you when...?"

We have a NEW "Where were you when...?" now.  Thank you America.

Remember though, Generation...we've won our first big victory in a battle that is just beginning.  We are NOT done yet.  It's NOT time to sit back and let our new president fix all of our problems for us.  Our leaders needed our help in becoming our leaders...and they need our help to lead us.  Remember that.

But for now...let's enjoy our victory.

So I'm gonna post my commentary on an article someone linked me to.  In order for this to make sense, I suggest you go check it and read it all.  And if you're REALLY daring, read the original article that inspired the one I'm commenting on and get the WHOLE picture!  (It's big, but frankly, it's very pertinent and I DARE you to read them both anyways.)

Article I am commenting on:
www.insidebayarea.com/ci_9583256?source=most_emailed

Article that inspired the one above:
www.theatlantic.com/doc/200807/google

And my rebuttal to Leonard's article:

(Let me preface this by saying that this is a commentary about the article above by Leonard Pitts Jr.  It is not a commentary about anyone who reads and/or enjoys this article.  It is also not a commentary about the original article that inspired Leonard's.  In fact, I appreciate anything that inspires though and discussion, so thanks to Nicholas Carr for writing the article that inspired Leonard; thanks to Leonard Pitts Jr. for posting his article; and thanks to Andy for forwarding Leonard's article.  That being said, here is my rebuttal...)

I read the article.  The whole article.  Then, I read the ACTUAL article that inspired this one; which is MUCH longer.  (I DARE YOU)  Then I read this article again, with knowledge of what the person who wrote it (claimed) to have read.

Although it does bring up a couple points that are perhaps valid, I must point out a couple things I believe weaken it's point.

First, this is hardly news.  Yes, I know that the fact that this has been talked about for some time doesn't render its merit invalid, I couldn't help but point out that this system of vast information has already given me the ability to say "I already know about this."

Next I present this quote form the article above: "Granted, this is all theory. To the best of my knowledge, no one has yet put it to scientific rigor."  To which I would ask, "Did THIS person even read the entire article to which they are referring?"  I quote the original article in question now: "...a recently published study of online research habits, conducted by scholars from University College London, suggests that we may well be in the midst of a sea change in the way we read and think."  It goes on to talk about the 5 year study conducted, and information about their findings.  I won't outline it all, read the article yourself...heh.  Still wondering about if any scientific studies that might have information about the idea in question?  Perhaps you could refer to the "stupid machine", silly columnist!:

http://www.google.com/search?q=internet+shortening+attention+spans&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a

(Don't lose me here.  Its just the internet.  I wouldn't want those links to more extensive information to steal away your ability to finish reading a blog comment critique!)

I also have to point out how this person has taken a vast, rather in-depth article and distilled it down to a nice, Lunchables-sized snack.  Even after doing that, he seems to have managed to miss information in the very article he is referring to; along with simply not doing any more research at all on the subject to become a more informed commentator.  The power of irony brings to mind an apparently prophetic quote also from the original article that inspired the one above: "And because they would be able to “receive a quantity of information without proper instruction,” they would “be thought very knowledgeable when they are for the most part quite ignorant.”"  (Yeah, I used a double quote there.  Sue me.)

Yes, the "Internet Age" is changing the way we think.  Yes, we (I) sometimes get lost in it.  Yes, it is work to learn to balance and integrate it into our lives and thinking.  And, most definitely, YES, it has great benefits that we can gain from if we learn to properly utilize them!

No, this is not anything new for us human beings at all.  Not by a LONG shot.  (As the article that resulted in this inspiration pointed out.)

And, perhaps most importantly: Yes, we WILL learn to deal with it.

Syndicated columnist?!  Perhaps Google HAS made you stupid, Leonard.  (Hey, he said it, not me!)

I can assure you though, I hasn't made ME stupid.

Maybe I should be a syndicated columnist...

SOOOO...I rarely do crap like this, but I did.  It sounded like fun.  And it was.  Thanks, Ann.

Meme time!  Make your own album complete with Band name, album title, and cover art.  Here's how if you want to do it:

1) Go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Random
The article title is the name of your band

2) Go to http://www.quotationspage.com/random.php3
The final words of the last quote on your page are the title of your album.

3) Go to: http://www.flickr.com/explore/interesting/7days/
The FOURTH image on the page is your album cover. You can choose to go to http://www.flickr.com/groups/flickrsocial/pool/ if you prefer a more dynamic, less philosophical cover.

4) Design your cover. Layout and presentation are up to you.

5) Post your cover, along with these instructions. In the comments your friends will tell you what kind of music you play and the name of the album's single.)

And here is mine:

Dear internet,

For some time now I've enjoyed surfing around your websites for funny/interesting/disgusting videos and pictures to help pass the time.  You and your many posters who provide the content have given me hours of time wasting enjoyment that I will never, ever get back...and that's just fine.

A few things have come into vogue as of late that I feel have either had their day, or never should have had one.  Please put a stop to the following things:

1. Videos that show something funny; and then show it again; and then again; and then in slow motion; and then slow motion again; and again; and then in SUPER slow motion; and again; and again; and again; ad nauseum.  Seriously people.  I saw it.  I didn't need to see it again and again, and playing in slow motion RARELY makes it any funnier, and super slow mo NEVER makes it any funnier.  Cut it out.

2. Ridiculous and unnecessary opening/ending credits for videos.  The other day I was watching some video...I don't remember what it was...in fact, I would not have even sat through the opening credits that were SO long if it wasn't for the fact that I was marveling and how much STUPID SHIT this person was putting up on the screen for no reason at all.  The video total length was like, 2 minutes...the actual clip was probably only about 15 seconds of that (not counting the slow mo and super slow mo replays).  So you wanted to give it a title?  "Okay. " And the date?  "Hmm...alright, I guess."  And now you wanna tell me what to watch for in this 15 seconds video, in case I blink and MISS IT?  "Uh...well...actually."   *video plays, slow mo takes, etc...*   Funny ending quote?  "Actually, thank you but..." Video production credits?  "I think I'm done watching your stup..." Production company name?  "ALRIGHT!  THAT'S ENOUGH!!!"  YOU'RE NOT FREAKIN "RAPID MONKEY SCREWING A TREE PRODUCTIONS!"  You're some kid, with no life, sitting in your room at your mom's house/dorm room.  Wow...you mastered iMovie or Windows Movie Maker or whatever crappy video editing BS that came with your 30 dollar Logitech Webcam.  Congratulations.  Just give me my 15 seconds of funny and shove off.

3. Soljah Boy videos.  I honestly have no idea where this came from.  It was never funny.  It never will be.  The fact that the Dramamtic Chipmunk got like, 5 videos total and this steaming pile of not-funny get like 5 a freakin' day makes me actually...well...it actually makes me make the Dramatic Chipmunk face.  What's REALLY funny is that there are people who actually listen to music like that.  (see section entitled "People who should be shot.")

4. People playing the Super Mario Brothers music on guitar, piano, synthesizer, drums, congas, pots and pans, their bare asses, other people's bare asses, their dog, their neighbor's dog, etc...  "Oh gee!  The Super Mario Brothers Music!!!  I remember that!  Wow, you can play it like its an actual song!  WOWWWWWOWOWOW!!!"  C'mon people, it's not complicated.  In fact, about 99.9% of all people playing video game music videos I can do without...unless its particularly impressive/beautiful.  ( like this orchestral Zelda motif )

5. In fact, the following themes/music I can do without any more versions of ever again in my life:  Mortal Kombat, Star Wars, Trogdor, The Simpsons, and The Internet is For Porn.

6. WoW characters dancing, doing movie scenes, making music videos, playing WoW, etc...  Not funny.  Just not.  Seriously, do you WoW geeks even think this is funny anymore?  Jeezus...  (and you may as well consider this one applying to you too, Sims characters)

7. Things about emo and "emos".  Who ever though it would become MORE annoying and MORE played out that emo itself?  And yet, it has.  Time to leave them alone, just because giving them a hard time has become MORE predictable and annoying.

8. ANYTHING related to the movie 300.  Nuff said.

Those things considered, there is a few things we need MORE of in the net...

1. People sitting in front of their webcams getting hit because they are acting stupid, or even getting hit for no reason at all.  I submit exhibits A, 2, and D.  I rest my case.  (I'd like add that ironically, the third video has a slow motion replay, which along with being unneccesary, leaves out the funniest part of the video, which is what he says at the end.)

2. Japanese game shows.  Seriously, do those people EVER run out of awesome ideas!?

3. People eating shit they really shouldn't eat.  Like the chicks eating a tablespoon of cinnamon, or the kid who eats a whole stick of butter.  Extra super bonus points if it causes extreme pain/nausea/sickness/freak-out.

4. Small children cussing.  Seriously, I bet that little girl COULD kick that monster's ass.

5. Non-football-players getting slammed by football players.  I think this may be the only thing I like about football.

6. Bring back the Dramatic Chipmunk.  I wasn't over him yet.

I appreciate the internet and everyone on it taking these things under consideration.

For those who didn't stay up late enough to catch the eclipse, here's what it would look like if your eyes were a cheap point&shoot digital camera...

While I was watching it, I thought about what a lunar eclipse is.  The shadow of the Earth on the moon, basically.  That lead my to wonder why I know that.  Like, when did I first learn it?  I realized that I first learned that from my grandpa.  For those who don't know, I grew up living next door to my grandpa (and grandpa, when she was still around).  We are very close.  As I was watching the moon disappear, it occurred to me how many things I learned from my grandpa.  How to play checkers.  How to play chess.  How to operate a video game.  How to work, and eventually how to build, a computer.

It just made me think even more about how much I owe my gramps.  Not that I don't already know that, but it seems the older I get, the more I realize about me is stuff I got from him.

Anyways...just some thoughts I had.

To the girl who didn't return my calls after our date awhile ago...

Yes, I saw you at Capture The Flag tonight.
Yes, I saw you quietly freak out and try to slip away unnoticed to make phone calls when I showed up.
Yes, I saw you constantly looking to see if I had noticed you.
Yes, I noticed you.
Yes, I saw you hiding along the edge of the safe zone while the rest of our team was planning a run.
Yes, I saw you hiding behind people at the bar afterwards.
Yes, I thought it was all very funny in a "why is she acting like this is high school" sort of way.

And yes, that laughing you thought might have been about you...it very well might have been.
You'd think someone who didn't even have the common courtesy to return a phone call wouldn't be so insecure as to try to act invisible.

PS...Oaklandish Capture the Flag is MY turf.  Have fun being uncomfortable.

So, I am known to be a night owl.  I stay up VERY late, of course.  It's gotten a little out of hand the past few days, but it's been kinda out of my hands.  Here I am now, at 4:30am...just finished watching "The Chumbscrubber", and not really even tired yet.  (btw, that's an awesome movie, especially if you're very familiar with SoCal suburbs.)

My week has been NUTS.  Here's what it was...
Sunday night/Monday morning: 12am-8am mixing session in studio.
Monday night: Geometry class.
Tues: Noon-3 DAW Class (Digital Audio Workstations) then 3-7 DAW Lab PLUS 7-11 extra lab block...which leads to...
Tues night/Wednesday morning: 12am-8am mixing session in studio.  (for those who are counting, at this point I had spent a nearly a solid 20 consecutive hours AT SCHOOL, with a couple meal breaks.)
Wednesday night: Geometry class, final.  (which I actually ended up not having to take and still getting an A on...sweet.)
Thurs.: Noon-3 DAW Class then 3-7 DAW Lab PLUS 7-11 extra lab block.

Fuckin' craziness.  I thought my sleep schedule was messed up before...but nothing will fuck up your body clock like walking in a recording studio when its dark, and walking out when its light.  I have to say though...I've been kicking ASS.  Geometry class this term, I've done so well that the teacher actually just GAVE me an A without me even needing to bother with the final.  In DAW, I've finished my 2 song mixes, both mastered and un-mastered, various ProTools exercises, and just today scored 100% on a Performance Evaluation.  PLUS, I just finished mixing/mastering a 7 song EP for a band from SoCal...my first "real" audio job.  (unpaid, of course...but still an actual, out of school, freelance audio engineering gig)  Now just to pass my ProTools Level 110 certification exam (I passed the 101 two weeks ago) on Saturday afternoon, and I'm home free and ON VACATION IN SOCAL FOR A WEEK!

Feeling very accomplished, and deserving of a vacation.  Oh, did I mention I got fucking mugged this week too?  Nevermind that...it's a whole other story.

Until next time...

-U

PS... The album I did was for an awesome band called "Hold Me Like a Gun"...they have a Myspace page HERE, but there isn't much on it right now as far as music goes, but I expect that there will be in the near future, seeing as how I'm staring at the final master of their CD right now.

So I felt the need to make a post.  Only problem is, I have no idea what to post about...so...uh....

World War Z: An Oral History of The Zombie War is a really kick ass book, that anyone who like zombies or horror in general should read.  It's easily the freshest take on the zombie apocalypse that I've seen in a long time.  Anyone who watched something like Night of The Living Dead or Dawn of The Dead, and wondered what was going on in the REST of the world, and where it would all eventually lead, this book is for you.

And that seems to be all I really have to say for now...

P.S. Muse and Radiohead should be the soundtrack for the zombie apocalypse.

RE: This story: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070607/ap_en_ce/paris_hilton

So, due to an "unspecified medical condition", a member of the new American royalty gets off the hook.  This is BULLSHIT.

This just goes to show how the social class system in the US is beginning to take shape.  They say that she still would have gotten out if she were a "plain Jane".  Not likely.  Let's get real, people...the elite get special treatment in the United States!  Period.  Its a situation that gets more and more prominent as time goes on.  And Paris Hilton is not one of the Americans that worked their ass off to get where she is.  She didn't work harder, or smarter, or with more dedication than the next person, and we in America would LOVE to think all our successful citizens do.  She inherited her position.  She inherited her wealth.  She inherited her celebrity.  She is famous for BEING RICH CAN FAMOUS.  And it has now been obviously shown that you can inherit special legal treatment.

Its not that I don't believe in our "system" here in the US.  I believe in the idea of the system.  I also believe that its current state is TERRIBLY BROKEN.  This is not acceptable under and circumstances.

Ah, LJ...we meet again...

So I went to church this morning.  Yeah, that's right.  I woke my ass up on Sunday morning and went to church.  I went to a local Unitarian Universalist congregation, so those of you who were thinking I was looking for Jesus or some crap like that can chill.  (incidentally, for anyone who may have NO idea what UUism is, and would care to know: http://www.uua.org/visitors/6798.shtml  )  I've been to the Oakland UU church up here...this morning I gave Berkeley's a try.  I preferred Oakland, I think.  But time will tell...

But the real issue here is a realization I'm coming to.  I am feeling drawn to the UU congregation.  The realization I came to today as I sat there was that I really am not sure WHY I am feeling drawn.  I mean, its not like a UU church is the type of place you go when you wonder what happens when you die.  And its not like I'm having any kind of crisis in that effect anyways.  Maybe I'm there to meet peers?  That may be the case, but I really am beginning to wonder if that is really it.

So basically, what I got out of today is that I feel drawn to spiritual communities for some reason that I cannot quite put my finger on.  I actually think that may be more of a draw to keep me going more consistently than anything else so far.  I may explore a farther congregation next time...perhaps over in San Fran.  As far as I can tell, here's what I believe I DO want in a congregation:

1. Feeling comfortable/belonging - The UU Community was something I was VERY connected with in Jr. High and High School.  It was a place I felt accepted.  A place I felt I REALLY knew I belonged.  I miss that.  I want it back.

2. I want to become involved with the kids - Maybe that sounds weird.  Like I said, as a youth, the community of peers and young adults we worked with were very pivotal in my development.  I feel the desire to "give back" to that in some way.  I would like to establish myself in a community well enough that I may be able to be entrusted to do that down the road somewhere.

So that's my assessment  of my current state of mind.  Taking in to consideration that I am not terribly often the greatest at assessing my OWN state of mind.

On a lighter note:

Spiderman 3 was so-so.  That's all I really have to say about that.  And that I would like to declare Leslie and Ann a couple of the coolest chicks in SF.  That is all.

Until next rant...

Once again, down in OC.  Too damn lazy to do shit.

I wish I could have 2 weeks in OC.  One week to RELAX...and then one week to go out and party with all my friends.  In fact, it seems that my trips to OC have, in one way or another, become weeks for me to come down and disappoint a bunch of people with my unreachability and laziness.  Plus the fact that, this place feel weirder and weirder every time I come down.  Less and less like home.  It disturbs me some.

To all who I forget, or leave out, and especially since not a single one of them will read this; I apologize.  You DO matter.

What the hell do people write about on this Livejournal thing anyways?  Was that it?

I forgot how good it feels to ramble.

Screw all the tags and moods.  My mood was "feels like writing".
